John Sisk & Son A Winner In The 2011 National Green Apple Awards

The winners of the Green Apple Awards 2011 for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage were announced on Monday at an awards ceremony at the University of Westminster, London.

John Sisk & Son were presented with a bronze award for their Government Offices, Earlsdon Park - Regeneration.  The judges commented:-

A ground source heat pump was installed that provided 47% of the total project energy demanded.

70% of the aggregate used was derived from the demolition materials which were crushed on site.  Due to an efficient onsite waste management system, a recycling rate of 85% was achieved.

The awards were presented by Trevor Baylis, the renowned British inventor, famous for inventing the wind up radio. Created in 1994, the Green Apple awards are one of the most respected environmental awards programmes in the world.

Now in its seventh year the Green Apple Awards recognise organisation’s for their contribution to the built environment and architectural heritage. The awards give recognition for all steps towards sustainability including design and construction, restoration and regeneration as well as product and service innovation.

The judges look for environmental benefits, social benefits, financial benefits, visual/aesthetic impact, energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, architectural heritage, traditional crafts and skills, minimising environmental disruption, innovation, transferability.

Entries were received from a wide range of organisations including the building and construction sector from sole traders to global construction companies as well as individuals and councils including: builders, construction companies, architects and surveyors, restoration specialists, interior designers, property developers, local authorities, traditional building crafts, products and materials suppliers, property services and consultants, housing associations and town planners.

John Sisk & Son have made a commitment to become a National Green Hero, an elite group of environmental achievers, who use their experience to help thousands of others – and the environment - around the world.

The Green Plan case study will now be published in The Green Book – the world’s only annual work of reference on environmental best practice. The aim is to help others to support the environment. This digital book is distributed globally, to environment professionals, reference libraries, universities, embassies and the media and this year have been distributed by media partner Dods throughout the Westminster community.

The Green Apple Awards are an accredited feeder scheme into the European Business Awards for the Environment and John Sisk & Son may now go on to represent the UK at the European Business Awards for the Environment in Brussels next year – one of the major international environmental awards schemes.
