Sisk helping the environment
21 August 2007
As pressure to combat global warming and reduce CO2 emissions increases, the Construction Industry in Ireland is pioneering the use of Carbon Neutral Building Materials.
The Convention Centre Dublin, being built by CMP (a 50:50 JV construction company owned by Sisk and Treasury Holdings), is the first building in the world to contain Carbon Neutral Concrete. By lowering the embodied CO2 of the concrete with the use of Ecocem Cement, and offsetting the remaining Carbon Footprint, the concrete becomes Carbon Neutral.
After water, concrete is the most widely used substance in the world. Its manufacture is responsible for over 6% of global CO2 emissions. Now, for the first time, concrete can be produced and supplied without dumping any CO2 into the atmosphere.
The use of Carbon Neutral Concrete in this project will save the emissions of 10,000 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of taking 4,000 cars off the road for a year. |
