By Colm Kelpie

IRISH companies have so far clinched more than €200 million worth of contracts for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Builders, electricians, architects and software and renewable energy professionals will all work on preparations for the massive sporting programme in London.

Enterprise Ireland and senior officials from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the body tasked with developing the project’s buildings and infrastructure, will hold a seminar today to attract further Irish businesses.

Enterprise Minister Batt O’Keeffe said: "I strongly urge other Irish companies to exploit the opportunity and support available through Enterprise Ireland and the ODA to secure contracts in the next phase of preparation for London 2012."

The next development phase involves the fitting-out of buildings and day-to-day running of the Games, with further contracts potentially up for grabs in security, catering, mobile buildings, waste management and venue fit-out.

ODA chairman John Armitt said although the bulk of ODA’s direct contracts have been awarded, there were opportunities with the organising committee established to run the games.

Companies which have so far won contracts include ABM Precast, Anord Control Systems,Banagher Concrete, renewable energy group Clearpower, IT firm Donseed, Heneghan Peng Architects, and Leinster Reinforcements.

Construction company John Sisk and Son was awarded the contract to build part of the athletes’ village. Building firm P Elliotts and manufacturers Techrete were also involved in the residential development.

The seminar will take place at Enterprise Ireland’s head office in Dublin.
