In 2008, Genzyme, located in Waterford and one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies embarked on a project to construct new office and cafeteria buildings, an extension to the existing QC Laboratory and the enabling and external works associated with the build. The existing Genzyme production facilities continued to operate throughout the construction period.
John Sisk & Son worked closely with the Client and their design team to challenge the project design and ensure the project was right first-time to avoid potential delays later in the delivery process. Sisk’s vast experience in laboratory and office construction supported critical decision making resulting in an efficient process overall.
The works commenced in August 2008 and were carried out on a phased basis with the new cafeteria handed over to the client on St Patrick’s Weekend in March 2009. This facilitated the commencement of the demolition of the old canteen building which was on the footprint of the new offices.
The new QC Lab building consisting of a single storey building of approximate size 1,250 m² including site development works and refurbishment of existing internal space within the plant. This extension interfaced fully over a full elevation with the existing Lab. The Lab was maintained open at all times during the works. The new Office building consists of a four storey building of 4,500 m².
The office building included the “Street” area which links the new buildings to the older parts of the facility. Other elements of the work included the extension of a carpark, refurbishment of existing office and lab areas within the facility, landscaping and external works.
There were 450,000 man hours worked on the project and all of these hours were worked accident-free.
The Office and Cafeteria building were constructed under the LEED New Construction (Version 2.2) programme operated by the US Green Building Council. The design and construction credits were submitted to the USGBC and the project was awarded the Gold standard within the rating system.
